Terms of Disservice

I guess you can thank the Roman Holidays for getting me back into Hanna-Barbera again!

Had nothing to do yesterday, and it came to me to draw these two. A lot of folks who saw it thought it was The Flintstones, and I basically told them that this is Flintstones but in Rome. Which accurately sums up the entirety of the Roman Holidays, lol XD

This show does have its faults…but I’d have to say these two aren’t one of them.

Make no mistake, Evictus is a MAJOR butthole, but is also a majorly entertaining butthole. He’s a combination of Mr. Krabs and Mr. Spacely, minus the worst qualities of Krabs (or at least, the show didn’t get to showcase them, seeing as it was so short), but adding on the annoying, micromanaging personality of Spacely. Add the hammy performance of Dom DeLuise as Evictus, and it’s a perfect mix of a character that you want to punch, but you also laugh at when he disses other characters and revels in his own pettiness.

As for Gus, he’s pretty blasé in comparison to the loudmouth Fred and the frantic George, but I kinda like that about him. I do admit that in senes where he’s trying to do the whole “madcap scheme” angle that Fred did, it did fall flat, but it was pretty funny to watch everything blow up in his face. Oh, and as I explained in a previous post, he has the perfect “I’m 100% over your shit” face that gets displayed throughout the show several times, which I made note to draw one time, and draw it I did. I might end up becoming “that one Gus Holiday fan” LOL XD

I used an official render for doodling Evictus, while Gus I took from one screenshot where he’s glaring at a tailor who straight up calls him fat XD I wanted to convey the “keep talking, and I’ll add murder to my list of crimes” relationship that these two have—although “if looks could kill you’d be dead ten times over” also works. There is ONE episode where they kinda set aside their differences…but personally, I love this animosity that they have, haha! And since I didn’t like the flesh-colored sclera that they gave them, I gave them normal whites, with hazel eyes for Evictus and dark green for Gus. Turned out quite nice, actually!

But yeah, enjoy this piece of Roman Holidays fan art!

Synopsis:

Very similar in theme to both The Flintstones and The Jetsons, The Roman Holidays brought a look at the "marble age" life in Ancient Rome, as seen through the eyes of Augustus "Gus" Holiday and his family. The opening shows a chariot traffic jam and a TV showing football on Channel "IV".

The Holidays, a Roman family living at the Venus DeMilo Arms Apartments in A.D. 63, deals with a variety of modern-day problems. Gus Holiday works at the Forum Construction Company for his demanding boss Mr. Tycoonius who is constantly threatening to fire Gus if an assignment he is given goes awry. He lives with his wife Laurie, children Precocia and Happius, and pet lion Brutus. Their lives are embittered by their exasperated landlord Mr. Evictus who tries to find proof of Brutus living with the Holidays.

My Rating: 9/10

I like it a lot. It is basically just a Flintstones rip-off (Well not really a rip off cuz it's by the same creators) but it has the same premise anyway. It follows that formula. I don't know though, I just don't like it as much. The characters are decent, I like the lion too. However, something just seems not as good as the Flintstones. I can't exactly put my finger on it though.

That being said though, it is still very entertaining and enjoyable. I think you definitely would like it, especially if you enjoy the Flintstones or the Jetsons.

Roman Holidays headcannon

So Laurie Holiday's at the local market, and discovers something interesting as could prove interesting when baking bread: Nothing less than a blend of 00 flour and malted barley flour. And also picks up a few recipes worth trying with the malted flour blend.

(For the uninitiated, 00 flour is the Italian term as refers to medium-texture wheat flour; 000 is finer textured, and 0 is coarse. And given that The Roman Holidays was basically patterned on The Flintstones, but set in Imperial Rome, it might be amusing to extend such appellations for flour so applied, even if the flour was more likely to be had in bulk and was unbleached.)

Rewatching the Roman Holidays made me remember how much I liked Gus. Mostly for his faces lol XD

Roman Holidays headcannon

Soooo ... picture Gus Holiday and son Groovius on an early-morning bonding-type session at the neighbourhood bath house, working up quite ths sweat in various sorts of games and exercises, including crude versions of handball, racquetball, squash and tennis such as were common in Roman times.

Which, mind you, is more or less the prelude for the bathing session, and Gus has Groovius along to introduce him to its pleasures and significance, especially the mixed-gender bathing of the caldedarium (hot bath), tepidarium (warm bath) and frigidarium (cold bath), in that order; mainly to release sweat and inner toxins, followed by a body rub session with volcanic sand or olive oil and the stigril (which could be compared to a modern cartridge razor, only made with animal bone or ivory) to keep the skin soft and supple.

(And Gus, for his part, wondering if Groovius, considering his youth, will likely have erotic fantasies stimulated by the effects of the bathing procedure.)
